Holy Family Society of the U.S.A. and Catholic Fraternal Life Announce Plans to Merge

At the February, 2007 Holy Family Society Supreme Board meeting, President Jim Rial presented a plan for merger with the Catholic Fraternal Life organization.  With the approval of the Supreme Board, Holy Family Society has since then focused on making this merger a reality.

Board members and delegates of the Holy Family Society met at a Special Convention on August 24, 2007 to vote on the Society's plan to merge.  Also present were Catholic Fraternal Life's Chairman of the Board, Melvin Weck, and Executive Vice President, Michael Leary.  The day began with a welcome from President Jim Rial and a prayer from the Society's Spiritual Director, Rev. George Klepec.  Both Jim Rial and Melvin Weck presented profiles of their respective organizations as of June 30, 2007.

Secretary/ Treasurer Jean Konrad and Recording Secretary Nancy Thorndyke both spoke of their support for the merger and the benefit it holds for HFS members.  Jean Konrad compared the merge to a marriage.  She explained that in a good marriage one partner always complements the other and that these two Societies will do just that.  "Together they will go on to become one of the outstanding Catholic Fraternal Societies."  Nancy Thorndyke talked about the future of the Society.  She feels that the Society should continue "looking for new avenues to keep our Society growing and reaching out for new ways to increase and serve our membership."

At Catholic Fraternal Life’s Special Convention Interim President and CEO, Thomas Sheehan, also had wonderful things to say about the merger.  "If ever there has been a perfect merger, this is it.  The Catholic Fraternal Life family is proud, indeed, to join forces with Holy Family Society in providing for a stronger and more effective fraternal benefit society.  The membership of both organizations are the true beneficiaries of this merger".

Other speakers included Immediate Past President Robert Kochevar, who reviewed the merger agreement, and CFL Executive Vice President Michael Leary, who introduced Pre-Need Insurance.  Pre-Need Insurance is currently offered by the Society in MA and RI and will continue to develop with the help of CFL.  Following the speakers, President Jim Rial requested a unanimous vote and the officers and delegates responded enthusiastically.

Catholic Fraternal Life met with its Board and delegates on September 15, 2007 and the vote to merge was also unanimous among the delegates.  These were the final steps needed to bring us closer to a successful merger. The combined Societies will be known as Catholic Holy Family Society and the effective date of the merger will be January 1, 2008.  The New Year ahead will bring new opportunities to serve the members of our soon-to-be Catholic Holy Family Society.
