 Charlie Merker, pictured with CHFS Fraternal Director Mary Barbara Kurtz Illinois Fraternal Alliance Selects 2011Fraternalists of the Year The Illinois Fraternal Alliance is a consortium of more than 50 nonprofit fraternal life insurance societies in the state of Illinois. Affiliated with the American Fraternal Alliance, they promote fraternalism among member societies and work together to keep family values alive. One of the 2011Fraternalists of the Year, selected by the Illinois Fraternal Congress, is Charlie Merker. Charlie has been a member of CHFS for more than 33 years. He rarely, if ever misses a council function and has held every elected Council position several times. Selling for his Council fundraisers, working Hearts and Hands projects, Matching Funds and Council Socials, Council breakfasts and attending Conventions and fraternal meetings are all a huge part of his life. Charlie is the Face of the Freeburg Council #10 Sweetheart Brunch every year. He has been a Habitat for Humanity volunteer for many years and served on the Catholic Fraternal Life Board of Directors for 17 years. In addition to his involvement in CHFS, he is also an active member of his parish. He is in the Usher Ministry at St. Joe’s Catholic Church, a Charter Member of Freeburg Library, Freeburg Rotary Club Past President and membership chair, member of Kiwanis Club of the Freeburg Area, Smithton American Legion Baseball Coach, United States Air Force Veteran and Freeburg Boy Scouts. He is founder and committee chair of Freeburg Rotary Relays for feeder schools to Freeburg High School. He worked for years with the Prairie State games and he goes above and beyond the call of duty in his role at United Way. Charlie was also recognized for his actions with a Certificate of Honor from Illinois State Representative Dan Reitz, 116th District.

 Vice President Brenda Pollmann presents fr. Henry Fischer with a donation of $2231.82 for St. Cecilia Church Renovation Project. On November 22, CHFS Council 22 hosted their annual social for their members. The evening began with a meeting, followed by a meal and social. Fr. Henry Fischer opened the meeting with a prayer which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. The meeting included discussions of goodies to be handed out at Santa's visit, the fund raisers for 2010, 50 year pins, and a discussion of the activities during 2009. During 2009, Council 22 donated a total of $3,104.82 to different causes, and of that, $2906.82 was given to St. Cecilia Church. Dates were set for the annual breakfast and social for next year.

 Fraternal Director Mary Barbara Kurtz presents the Fraternalist of the Year Award to Dale Gall
Dale Gall was named the 2009 Catholic Holy Family Society Fraternalist of the Year at the annual Fraternal Leaders Meeting, held at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, in Belleville, Illinois, on May 9th . Fraternal Director Mary Barbara Kurtz presented Dale with the award and medallion. He has been a member of Trenton Council #8 for over 47 years. His council involvement has been measureless in terms of volunteer support, countless work hours and ongoing commitment to CHFS. Dale has held every council officer position, including President and Vice president. In 2005, Dale began attending our annual Habitat for Humanity with his daughter Dana and wife Judy. This past year his son Chad joined him and their entire family worked on the 2008 build in Joliet, IL. In 1993 when Dale’s career moved him from Illinois to Minnesota, it still did not prevent him from staying active in his council. On his many short trips home to visit family, he would participate in council projects. Dale is an essential part of his council and is involved in selling for the council fund-raisers, working Hearts and Hands projects, Matching Funds, council socials and he has served as a delegate for many conventions. Not only is he active in CHFS, but Dale is an active member of his parish serving as an Usher on Sundays and a server at funeral masses. He belongs to the Trenton Knights of Columbus, Mater Dei High School Fathers and Friends, St. Mary’s Holy Name and Trenton Emergency Management Services. As a member of the Knights of Columbus, Dale has received the Family of the Year Award, Knight of the Year award and many other council awards over the years. Dale and his wife Judy have been married for 43 years. They have 2 children, 1 granddaughter and 1 grandson on the way! Congratulations Dale! |
